In the early 1990s, Ford debuted the Lightning, which was a powerful performance truck. The new Lightning is not only exciting, but it is electric. Literally. The latest incarnation of the special edition Ford truck is set to be the first electric-powered truck, and it is intended to show just how powerful and efficient electric vehicles can be. And here at our dealership, you can learn more about it!
The F-150 Lightning will look very much like its gas-powered twin, the current Ford F-150. However, the Lightning will offer a light bar over the grille that connects to the headlights. On higher level trims, the taillights will do the same on the tailgate. The body of the Lightning will be a SuperCrew four door cab with a 5.5 foot bed. The wheelbase and the width of the Lightning and the current F-150 configuration will be the same.
How Will the Ford F-150 Lightning Be Powered?
The Ford F-150 Lightning is a totally electric vehicle, which means that its power will come from two lithium-ion battery packs. Ford is expected to offer two types of battery packs: a standard battery pack, which will offer 230 miles of range before a necessary charge; and an Extended Range battery that is expected to go at least 300 miles before you'll need to plug the battery in for a charge.
The horsepower for the Ford F-150 Lightning is rather astounding. The standard range battery pack is expected to provide up to 426 horses under the Lightning's hood, while the extended range's battery promises a whopping 563 horsepower. When it comes to torque, the Lightning is expected to produce 775 lb-ft of torque (whether its the standard or extended range battery pack).
Like many of the electric cars so far produced, the Lightning will be quick, agile, and packed with performance power. The Lightning is poised to go from zero to sixty in just over four seconds! (Compare that to the current performance F-150, the Raptor, which goes zero to sixty at just under five seconds).
It's also important to note that the Ford F-150 Lightning will not possess a live rear axle; the Lightning will use an independent rear suspension.
Let's not forget charging time - the Ford F-150 Lightning is expected to be fully charged within three hours; in a pinch, the Lightning can be charged to 80 percent in just under forty-five minutes. This allows you to charge up quickly and to easily get back on the road in Ellijay or Blairsville.
Here's another caveat to owning the electric Lightning - should your home's power be out for an extended amount of time, the Ford F-150 Lightning is predicted to be able to power one's entire home for up to three days.
What Will the Interior of the Ford F-150 Lightning Look Like?
The Ford F-150 Lightning will offer much the same interior as the current Ford F-150. One notable difference will be the twelve-inch instrument cluster, which will be paired with a twelve-inch infotainment touchscreen. Some trims will offer a whopping 15.5-inch touchscreen monitor.
BlueCruise will be standard on the Ford F-150 Lightning. This is a hands-free technology that updates existing features and is slated to improve overall performance of the vehicle as well.
What are the Trim Levels of the Lightning? Will They Be the Same As the Ford F-150?
No. The Ford F-150 Lightning will be available in four trim levels: the Pro, the XLT, the Lariat, and the Platinum. The Pro is the base model, and although it will offer much of the features mentioned throughout this article, not much is known about the other trim levels. The XLT will offer larger touchscreens, as mentioned previously. The Lariat and the Platinum will offer the Extended Range package.
